Emmanuel: A Beacon of Hope

Background
Emmanuel Mathew Tirkey, a 5th-grade student from Lokra village, belongs to the Orang tribe. His family faces socioeconomic challenges: his father is a carpenter, and his mother is employed at a church, who has completed her education only up to class IX. Despite these obstacles, Emmanuel joined the Anubhav Learning Centre in July 2023, seeking opportunities for growth.

Discovering Dreams:

Emmanuel’s first exposure to the centre’s summer workshop was transformative. The experience of engaging in drama, singing, and dancing sparked his curiosity and eagerness to explore new learning avenues. Emmanuel was a hyperactive boy with a low attention span. He didn’t have any guidance, at home, but had a desire to learn something new. Because of his hyperactive nature, he remained lost within himself and didn’t ask questions. He was too busy with his household chores and usually avoided attending academic support sessions but after getting motivation from Anubhav’s environment, a difference in his habits was noticed as he overcame his hyperactiveness.

Empowering Excellence:

Initially struggling with English, Emmanuel benefited significantly from the personalised attention and child-friendly pedagogy at Anubhav. With consistent support, he overcame his language barriers, became fluent in English, and even took on the role of a peer mentor, helping others with similar challenges.

Breaking Boundaries:

Emmanuel’s progress was noteworthy to his mother, who appreciated the centre’s focus on critical thinking over rote learning. This approach, combined with individualised instruction, allowed Emmanuel to excel academically and gain a deeper understanding of various subjects.

Empowering futures:

Emmanuel’s journey highlights the transformative impact of community-driven educational initiatives. His story is a testament to how targeted educational support can empower marginalised children. His resilience and growth illustrate the powerful role that community centres like Anubhav play in fostering a brighter future for their students.
